Solo Exhibition at the Grand Marais Art ColonyOpening Reception | January 9, 4 - 6pm exhibit
Open | January 9 - February 1This exhibit features new work by Lynn Speaker, which are records of investigations that embrace uncertainty & transition. Speaker’s work is informed by the North Shore landscape & what she finds around her— stones, bones, plants, trees, animals. In searching & discovery these found objects are ultimately remnants of place, time, memory, & experience.
Lynn Speaker is a fiscal year 2014 recipient of an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

To see the garden in ways we’ve not seen it before. That is the goal of Make Garden. Artists have a way of twisting things, relating things that are not normally related, exaggerating things that don’t need exaggeration. The artists in this exhibition have gone back and forth between their gardens and studios to create strange organic expressions that can inform life. This is the Avant-garden. The garden unpredicted.
2014 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant
During the 2014 grant period I will create a new body of process-based drawings. The drawings will be based on my experiences in nature combined with experimental materials and techniques. The in-progress work will be exhibited at my studio during Art-A-Whirl in May 2014 and later in the year in Grand Marais, MN.

This exhibition recalibrates the natural/human-made lens through which we, the many, (and too many) people see the world we live in. This is the Big Sky/Little Man show, where sweeping skies above the plains of earth and big environments are tugged on by the many, puny people. Large paintings and photos will cover the walls of the gallery, while miniature housing developments and human figures will set on the floor. Small (less than 6x8 inches) figurative paintings will be interspersed.

This exhibition features four male/female pairs of artists working in four distinct artistic genres. The purpose of the exhibit is to stimulate the audience and open them to more meaningful questions about male or female views. Typically we look at art as individual output/endeavor. In this exhibit, each pair has similarity of subject matter, theme, and art form; the pairing of both a male and female viewpoint gives rise to the unanswerable question: What are the meaningful differences and similarities of the male/female psyche?
